Senator Lindsey M. Williams Urges Full Funding of Program to Support Senior Nutrition and Local Farmers

Pittsburgh, PA − June 30, 2025 − Earlier this month, Senator Lindsey M. Williams and members of the Senate Democratic Caucus sent a letter to the Pennsylvania Congressional Delegation expressing their significant concerns over the dramatic reductions and delays in funding for the 2025 WIC and Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Programs. A full copy of that letter can be found on Senator Williams’ website.

In 2024, SFMNP provided five $10 vouchers, $50 in total, to income-eligible seniors to purchase locally-grown, fresh produce at farmers markets. In 2025, that amount dropped to five $5 vouchers, $25 in total. Due to a delay and partial disbursement of federal funds, the total amount of vouchers dropped significantly per county. Allegheny County received 49% of the requested WIC program vouchers and 74% of the requested SFMNP vouchers.

Senate Democratic Caucus Policy Committee Hosts Second Hearing Regarding Worker Protections

PITTSBURGH, PA − June 12, 2025 − Today, Senate Democratic Policy Committee Chair Nick Miller held a second hearing to continue the dialogue on what is needed to safeguard Pennsylvania’s infrastructure and economy through a skilled and dependable workforce.

“Today’s hearing provided an opportunity for more stakeholders to share their insights on the challenges that workers encounter today,” said Senator Miller. “I am appreciative of the testimonies shared from union members and the organizations that represent a large portion of the workforce. It is crucial to guarantee that employers do not create an uneven playing field for workers.”

Senate Labor and Industry Committee Unanimously Passes Legislation to Protect Construction Workers From Misclassification

ARRISBURG, PA  June 10, 2025 − The Senate Labor and Industry Committee today unanimously passed Senate Bill 72, legislation that strengthens protections for construction workers who are misclassified as independent contractors. The bill, sponsored by Senators Kane, Tartaglione, L. Williams, and Robinson, makes significant improvements to Act 72 of 2010, the Construction Workplace Misclassification Act.

“Spending over four decades as a plumber, I’ve seen firsthand how worker misclassification hurts working families and honest contractors,” said Senator John Kane. “This isn’t just about paperwork, it’s about putting food on the table and making sure workers get the benefits and protections they’ve earned. When contractors cheat the system by misclassifying workers, they’re stealing from hardworking Pennsylvanians who just want a fair shot at making a decent living. Our bill puts some real teeth into enforcement and tells bad actors they can’t get away with stealing from workers anymore.”
