Pittsburgh, PA − July 10, 2025 − Senator Lindsey M. Williams applauds the Pennsylvania House for Wednesday’s bipartisan vote to pass HB 1697, the Taxpayer Prevention Against Fraud Act, sponsored by Rep. Frank Burns (D-72). HB 1697 creates a Pennsylvania False Claims Act, similar to Senator Williams’ SB 38, the Commonwealth Fraud Prevention Act for Taxpayer Accountability.

“There is a lot of conversation right now in Washington, D.C., and Harrisburg about Medicaid/Medicare fraud by individuals,” said Senator Williams. “But the reality is that the vast majority of taxpayer money lost to fraud is not the result of individuals receiving benefits. These major losses come from corporations intentionally lying and billing the state and federal governments for services that have not been rendered. 

HARRISBURG − July 10, 2025 − On July 7, 2025, House Bill 865, originally introduced by Senator Lindsey Williams (D-38) and Senator Tracy Pennycuick (R-24) adopted by the state House of Representatives, was signed into law as Act 32 of 2025.

Pennsylvania became a national leader in educational benefits for National Guard members when it launched the Military Family Education Program (MFEP) in 2019. The MFEP, similar to the well-known GI Bill, covers the cost of a state-system college education for a dependent of a member of the National Guard as a benefit for a six-year enlistment.

ARRISBURG, PA − June 10, 2025 − The Senate Labor and Industry Committee today unanimously passed Senate Bill 72, legislation that strengthens protections for construction workers who are misclassified as independent contractors. The bill, sponsored by Senators Kane, Tartaglione, L. Williams, and Robinson, makes significant improvements to Act 72 of 2010, the Construction Workplace Misclassification Act.

“Spending over four decades as a plumber, I’ve seen firsthand how worker misclassification hurts working families and honest contractors,” said Senator John Kane. “This isn’t just about paperwork, it’s about putting food on the table and making sure workers get the benefits and protections they’ve earned. When contractors cheat the system by misclassifying workers, they’re stealing from hardworking Pennsylvanians who just want a fair shot at making a decent living. Our bill puts some real teeth into enforcement and tells bad actors they can’t get away with stealing from workers anymore.”
